Joohee Jeong, pianist

Joohee Jeong, originally from South Korea, began her formal piano studies at Indiana University South Bend, where she studied under the renowned pianist Alexander Toradze. During her time at IUSB, she earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Piano Performance, performing frequently as a soloist and chamber musician. She appeared in numerous recitals and concerto performances, including appearances with the IUSB Philharmonic Orchestra and in the Ruthmere Museum Concert Series. Her early training in South Korea and her studies in the United States laid a strong foundation for her career as both a performer and educator.

She later pursued a second Master of Music degree in Collaborative Piano at Illinois State University, studying under Geoffrey Duce. At ISU, she held a pre-professional assistantship and played a central role in the school’s vocal and instrumental performance programs. She served as accompanist for the university’s opera productions and concert choir, collaborating closely with student singers and conductors. In addition to her accompanying duties, she was an instructor in the Community School for the Arts, where she taught private piano lessons to students of various ages and levels. Her work at ISU further deepened her passion for ensemble music-making and music education.

Currently, Jeong is pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance at the University of North Texas, where she holds a Teaching Assistantship in the Opera Department. In this role, she works closely with vocal coaches, faculty, and student singers, contributing to opera rehearsals, productions, and studio classes. She was recently inducted into the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society in recognition of her outstanding academic and musical achievements. In addition to her academic and teaching responsibilities, she remains an active performer, frequently appearing in solo, chamber, and collaborative settings. Her performance experience includes concerts in South Korea, the United Kingdom, and across the United States, and she is particularly committed to supporting young singers and instrumentalists through her work as a collaborative pianist.

As a teacher, Joohee is committed to helping her students become independent and expressive musicians. She believes that the ultimate goal of music education is to empower students to confidently approach music on their own — not only to play the correct notes, but to understand and communicate the emotional and structural content of each piece. Her lessons are tailored to each student’s needs, and she aims to cultivate curiosity, discipline, and a love for music that will last long after formal lessons end.
