Getting Started
What age should my child start music lessons?
We generally recommend starting piano lessons at age 4, and lessons for most other instruments, such as guitar, violin, voice, drums, and more, at ages 5 to 6. That said, every child develops differently, and we believe the best way to find out if your child is ready is to experience a lesson firsthand.
We invite families with younger children to schedule a free demo lesson so your child can meet their potential teacher and we can assess their readiness together. There is truly no upper age limit. We proudly serve students of all ages, from young children to adults returning to music at any stage of life.
Do you provide instruments, or do we need to purchase or rent one?
We do not provide instruments for home practice, as students need their own instrument to practice between lessons, and consistent practice is key to progress. However, we understand that choosing the right instrument can feel overwhelming, especially for new families.
That is why we have prepared an exclusive Instrument Purchase and Rental Guide specifically designed to help our students and families make the right decision with confidence. The guide covers what to look for, trusted rental and purchase options, and how to choose the appropriate size or level for your child. Please ask our front desk staff for your copy when you enroll.
Can I enroll in the middle of the year?
Yes. Music Institute of North Texas offers year-round open enrollment, which means you never have to wait for a new semester or school year to begin. Students can enroll in private lessons at any time, and your first lesson can typically be scheduled within days of registration.
For group lessons, our teachers review previously covered material at the start of every class. However, if a group class has been running for a while, we strongly recommend that new students complete a series of catch-up private lessons before joining. This ensures your child enters the group class feeling confident and comfortable with the material, rather than struggling to keep up from day one. Our team will assess where the class is and guide you on how many catch-up lessons are recommended.
Tuition is prorated based on your enrollment date, so you only pay for the lessons remaining in the month. There is no penalty for starting mid-year and no long-term contract is required.
Can I try out lessons for one month before committing?
Yes. We offer Trial Lessons for families who want to experience our teaching before making a full-year commitment. A standard trial consists of four (4) private lessons, giving you a full month to get a feel for the instruction, the teacher, and our school environment.
A few things to know about trial lessons:
• Trial lesson rates are slightly higher than standard monthly tuition, but there is no registration fee required to participate.
• During the summer months (June and July), trial lessons shift to the Summer Private Lessons format. You may purchase four or more lessons during the summer.
• Trial lessons are a great way to experience our approach firsthand, including our thoughtful teacher matching, curriculum style, and facility, before enrolling for the full academic year.
We also invite all prospective students to schedule a free demo lesson or a tour of our Frisco or Prosper campus. Contact us at 972-668-6600 or Info@MusicInstituteNT.com to get started.

Our classrooms are fully soundproofed, providing a focused learning environment for every student. We invite you to schedule a tour to see our facility firsthand. Lesson Structure and Scheduling
How long are lessons and how often do they meet?
We offer private lessons in three durations: 30 minutes, 45 minutes, and 60 minutes. The right length depends on your child's age, goals, and level.
For students pursuing examinations such as the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM), Trinity College London, or ABRSM exams, or for more advanced students, a minimum of 45 minutes per lesson is required to allow sufficient time for proper preparation and technique development.
Most students take one lesson per week. However, we also offer and actively encourage multiple lessons per week for students who want to accelerate their progress. More frequent instruction means students receive feedback before practicing mistakes, helping build correct habits from the start.
What happens if we need to cancel or reschedule a lesson?
We understand that life happens, and our makeup lesson policy is one of the most generous you will find. In fact, we are one of the very few schools in the area that still offers private makeup lessons.
Private Lessons: All absences must be reported to the Front Desk, not the teacher directly. A minimum of 24 hours' notice is required for standard cancellations. For illness, emergencies, or online technical issues, a minimum of 1 hour's notice is accepted. Failure to provide proper notice will result in forfeiture of the lesson with no makeup eligibility.
Each student is eligible for up to three (3) makeup lessons per school year. Makeups must be scheduled after October 1 and completed before the student's final enrolled day. Once a makeup is confirmed by email, it cannot be rescheduled. Makeup credits may carry forward year to year, provided enrollment remains continuous and the student is registered for Week 1 of the next academic year.
Group Lessons: Students may attend another available group class as a makeup, subject to availability (not guaranteed). Group makeup credits cannot be converted to private lessons.
For your convenience, students can cancel lessons and schedule makeup lessons directly through our online student portal, anytime, at your convenience.
Can lessons be taken online or only in-person?
We offer both in-person lessons at our Frisco and Prosper campuses, as well as online lessons through our Remote Learning Program. Online lessons are available for private lesson students who are unable to attend in person, whether due to illness, travel, weather, or schedule constraints.
We encourage students to switch to online rather than miss a lesson entirely. Keeping your lesson time consistent, even virtually, is far more beneficial than taking a break. Momentum and consistency are everything in music education.
Can we sit in during my child's lessons?
For private lessons, yes. Parents are warmly welcome to sit in and observe private lessons at any time, and we actively encourage it, especially for younger students. Since we only see students once or twice a week, parent involvement at home is one of the most important factors in a child's musical progress. Observing the lesson helps you understand exactly what your child is working on and how to support their practice during the week.
If you prefer not to be in the room for the full lesson, we encourage you to arrive 5 minutes before the lesson ends so the teacher can give you a direct update on what was covered and walk you through the week's practice assignments.
For group lessons, parents are not permitted to sit in during class. This is a firm school policy. Our group lesson environment is designed to allow teachers to focus entirely on the students in the room. We ask that parents wait in our comfortable lobby area during group class time. The last 5 minutes of every group class are reserved for a brief parent check-in so you can ask the teacher questions, learn about the week's homework, and stay engaged in your child's progress.
Can siblings share a private lesson?
Yes. Students are welcome to share a private lesson slot, and shared lessons are treated as private lessons for each student involved. An additional sharing fee applies per student. Please contact us at 972-668-6600 or Info@MusicInstituteNT.com for details on current rates.
Shared lessons work best when students are of similar age and level. If students are at very different stages, we may recommend separate lesson times so each student receives the individualized instruction they need to continue progressing.
Do you offer in-home lessons?
We do not offer in-home lessons. In our experience, students take their lessons more seriously and make faster progress when they come to a dedicated school setting. Our Frisco and Prosper campuses provide a professional yet warm and welcoming environment, with soundproofed classrooms that are completely free from the household noise and distractions that can interrupt learning at home.
That said, if attending in person is not possible, we offer outstanding online lessons through our Remote Learning Program. Our online lessons are taught by the same expert faculty using a structured, step-by-step approach that keeps students progressing consistently from wherever they are. Whenever a student is ready to transition back to in-person lessons, the switch is seamless.
Teaching Approach and Curriculum
What teaching methods do you use?
At Music Institute of North Texas, all of our teachers are university-trained musicians who follow MINT's own thoughtful pedagogical approach, one refined over more than 16 years of teaching students at every level. We believe in structured, goal-oriented instruction that is also personal and adaptive to each student's learning style.
We take particular care in matching students with the right teacher, considering personality, learning style, and musical goals, because we know that the right teacher-student relationship makes all the difference. Families are welcome to schedule a free demo lesson to meet a teacher before committing to enrollment.
Do you teach music theory along with instrument skills?
Yes. Music theory is an integral part of a complete music education and is woven into our private and group lessons throughout our curriculum. Students who wish to go deeper also have access to dedicated Theory and Music Composition classes.
For students preparing for examinations such as the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM), theory preparation is built directly into their lesson plan. We also offer preparation for Texas State Theory Tests, which give students a meaningful credential and goal to work toward.
Can my child switch teachers if we are unsatisfied?
Yes, and this flexibility is one of the genuine advantages of studying at Music Institute of North Texas. With a full roster of university-trained faculty across both our Frisco and Prosper campuses, we have the ability to arrange teacher changes when needed.
That said, we always recommend speaking with our Director first before making any change. Many concerns about teaching style, pace, communication, or repertoire can be resolved through a direct conversation, and our teachers are experienced in adapting to each student's needs. If a teacher change is ultimately the right step, we will handle the transition thoughtfully to ensure continuity of progress.
What happens if my child decides to switch to a different instrument?
We are well-equipped to handle it. One of the most practical advantages of studying at Music Institute of North Texas is that we offer lessons in a wide range of instruments all under one roof: piano, guitar, voice, violin, viola, cello, harp, drums, ukulele, and more. If your child wants to explore a different instrument, there is no need to find a different school.
Before switching, we encourage you to have a conversation with our Director. In our experience, the desire to change instruments often reflects a temporary frustration or a challenge that has a solution rather than a true change in interest. When a switch is the right choice, we make it as smooth as possible, connecting your child with the right teacher for their new instrument.
Progress and Performance Opportunities
Are recitals mandatory or optional?
Recitals are optional but strongly encouraged. We believe performance is an essential part of a complete music education, not just an add-on. When students prepare a piece for performance, they learn how to take something from scratch, perfect it over time, and present it with confidence in front of an audience. These are life skills that extend far beyond the music room.
We do not charge an additional fee for recitals. It is included in your enrollment. Performances also give students meaningful goals to practice toward, and research consistently shows that students with clear goals practice more consistently and make faster progress.
Do you offer preparation for competitions, exams, or auditions?
Absolutely. This is one of our greatest strengths. We offer comprehensive preparation for a wide range of performance and academic opportunities, including:
- Recitals and Student Showcases
- Local, National, and International Music Competitions
- Music Festivals sponsored by the South Frisco Music Teacher Association, with certificates, comments, and ribbons provided
- Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Certifications
- Trinity College London and ABRSM Examinations
- Texas State Theory Tests
- All-Region and All-State Orchestra and Choir Auditions
- Solo and Ensemble audition preparation
- Dallas Children's Choir (DCC) and Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra (GDYO) auditions
Our teachers are experts in high-level audition preparation, and our students have earned All-State seats in both choir and orchestra. They are also top prize winners at competitions at the local, state, and international levels. These achievements become meaningful credentials on college applications and make music a truly enriching extracurricular activity.
How often do you assess student advancement?
Progress is monitored on an ongoing basis within every lesson. Teachers continuously observe technique, musicality, and repertoire development and adjust the lesson plan accordingly. For students pursuing formal certifications or auditions, preparation timelines are structured in advance with clear milestones.
Families are always welcome to speak with their teacher or our front desk staff to discuss their child's progress and goals at any time.
Tuition, Registration, and Policies
What are your tuition rates and payment options?
Tuition rates vary based on lesson duration (30, 45, or 60 minutes) and lesson frequency. We offer year-round open enrollment with prorated tuition, so you can start at any time without waiting for the beginning of a semester. We offer discounts for homeschoolers and pay-in-full tuition plans.
For our current tuition schedule, please contact us at Info@MusicInstituteNT.com or call 972-668-6600. Our team will be happy to walk you through all options and find the right fit for your family.
Is there a registration fee or other costs?
Yes, there is a registration fee. After completing your online enrollment, you will receive a call within one business day to confirm your first lesson day and time. Once your confirmation email is received, you are all set to begin.
Additional costs to be aware of include music books and materials (purchased separately) and any exam or competition registration fees, which vary by program. Please contact us for full details.
What is your policy for withdrawing from lessons?
We do not require long-term contracts. We believe families should stay because they love what we offer, not because they are locked in. Withdrawal policies are outlined in our MINT School Policy document, available on our website and provided at enrollment.
Please note that makeup lesson credits carry forward from year to year only if enrollment remains continuous. For questions about withdrawal timelines or credits, please contact our front desk directly.
